Hello! My name is Giulia Civitico, and I am the artist behind Microamica.

I was born in Maniago (PN) on October 22, 1987 and since childhood, I have been passionate about drawing, handcrafts and all things manual.

In June 2006, I graduated from the Istituto Statale d’Arte in Cordenons, specializing in Graphic Design and Photography. During that time, I discovered various traditional printing techniques and quickly fell in love with them.

To deepen my skills, I enrolled at ISIA in Urbino, where I earned a BA in Graphic Design and Visual Communication in 2012. After university, I began exploring my personal artistic style, which eventually led me to favor papercutting over other techniques.

My artistic journey began in the world of graphic design and printmaking techniques, where I was able to explore the power of imagery, composition, and mark-making. From the very start, I was fascinated by the possibility of transforming an idea into something tangible, through tools such as screen printing, linocut, and letterpress. In these techniques, I discovered a captivating balance between technical precision and creative freedom.

Over time, however, I felt the need for a more direct, more hands-on, and intimate form of expression. This need led me to approach paper not just as a surface, but as a true expressive medium. That’s how my interest in papercutting was born—a technique that won me over with its simplicity and, at the same time, its powerful storytelling quality.

In papercutting, I found a language that blends precision and poetry: every cut is a deliberate yet delicate gesture, and every void carved out holds the same weight as the solid forms. I am fascinated by how a simple sheet of paper can be transformed, through a patient and meditative process, into a work that plays with light, shadow, and space.

This transition from graphic design to papercutting was not an abandonment, but rather a natural evolution. The lessons of printmaking—the attention to detail, the sense of visual rhythm, the balance between form and content—continue to live on in my current works, now enriched with a more tactile and sculptural dimension.

Papercutting has allowed me to slow down, to listen to the rhythm of each gesture, and to build a silent narrative made of absent lines and meaningful solids. It is within this subtle space between surface and depth that my artistic research now unfolds.
